NC Fisherman Finds Himself Surrounded by Feeding Frenzy

This past April, off the coast of Cape Point, NC, professional surfer and fisherman Brett Barley was out on his personal watercraft when he unexpectedly encountered a massive shark feeding frenzy. The spectacle involved what appeared to be hundreds of sharks, covering an area of over four acres as they voraciously consumed baitfish. To his astonishment, Barley also observed a large school of red drum joining the frenzy. Describing the experience as a "Nat Geo Wild moment," he captured as much of the action as possible with his GoPro camera and shared the footage on his Instagram profile.

According to Jeremy Perdue, the CEO, Founder, and Manager of NC Shark Savers, the sharks involved in this feeding frenzy can be identified as various species of requiem sharks, including Blacknose, Blacktip, and Sandbar Sharks—some of the most common species found in the coastal waters of North Carolina.
