The Inconvenient Truth about NC Shark Laws

The most critical takeaway from North Carolina's shark laws is that the state government currently permits the hunting of numerous endangered and vulnerable shark species every single day of the year. This unrestricted hunting severely impacts their ability to recover and thrive in our waters.

Proclamation FF-3-26: A Closer Look

Our primary concern lies with NC Proclamation FF-3-26. This proclamation designates 18 out of nearly 60 shark species in North Carolina as unprotected, allowing recreational harvest year-round. Alarmingly, many of these 18 species are classified as endangered or vulnerable to endangerment, making this law detrimental to their conservation efforts. This continuous harvesting prevents population recovery and pushes these vital predators closer to extinction.

Take Action: Be a Voice for Sharks

Your voice can make a difference. We urge you to consider writing letters to the state governor, as well as the secretary and director of North Carolina Marine Fisheries. Express your concerns about the declining shark populations and the adverse impact of the current laws on their conservation. Additionally, please reach out and sign petitions advocating for stronger protections for our shark species. Together, we can help protect these magnificent creatures.
